North Shore school catchments: how to check which school a home is in

Checked 6 October 2026 · next review January 2027

On the North Shore, the school a child attends is set by the home’s address, not by the neighbourhood name on a listing. North Vancouver and West Vancouver each run an online school locator, and both districts say a catchment address does not guarantee a seat. Check the exact address with the district before you write an offer.

Call them before you rely on anything here

Catchment boundaries, programs and registration dates change, and everything below is subject to change. Give the district the exact address before you rely on it.

West Vancouver Schools (SD45)604-981-1000 · info@wvschools.ca · 1075 21st Street
The short answer
  • Both districts decide catchment by the address where the parents or guardians live. North Vancouver says pre-sale agreements are not considered.
  • Use the district’s school locator, not a map or a listing. North Vancouver says that where its map and its locator disagree, the locator is used.
  • A catchment address does not guarantee a seat. Both districts place students according to available space and programs.
  • Registration for the 2027–28 school year opens on 15 October 2026 in both districts.

North Vancouver: the six secondary school families

North Vancouver School District groups its elementary schools into families, each feeding one secondary school. This is the district’s own list from its kindergarten registration guide. The district does not publish which streets or neighbourhoods each family covers, so check the address in the locator.

Cloverley Elementary, 970 Shavington Street, opened in September 2026. Its catchment, approved by the Board on 23 September 2025, runs from Lonsdale Avenue east to Lynn Creek and from the waterfront north to the south side of Keith Road, and it took in parts of the Ridgeway, Brooksbank, Queensbury and Queen Mary catchments. If you are buying in that area, check the address again. Mountainside Secondary is an alternative school with no catchment.

West Vancouver: three secondary schools

West Vancouver Schools serves the District of West Vancouver, the Village of Lions Bay and Bowen Island with 14 elementary and three secondary schools. The district does not publish an elementary-to-secondary family list, and it names the communities for only one secondary school.

Proof of address

North Vancouver

Proof that you live at the address, such as a lease or a property document. The district says the current address determines catchment and that pre-sale agreements are not considered, so a presale you have not moved into does not count.

West Vancouver

One primary proof, such as a property tax or assessment notice, a tenancy agreement or a purchase agreement, plus a utility bill. Month-to-month tenancies are not accepted. Applicants to Chartwell, Cypress Park, Cedardale, Pauline Johnson, West Bay, Westcot and Sentinel need one more document.

Before you make an offer

  • Put the exact address into the district’s school locator and keep a screenshot with the date.
  • Call or email the district with the address and the grade, and ask whether that school is currently full for that grade.
  • If a French Immersion place matters, ask how the lottery has gone in recent years. Living in the catchment does not decide it.
  • If you are buying a presale or moving after the registration window, ask the district how your dates affect your application.
